To assure our countries freedom, the government should not be able to spy on its citizens. Because OUR country at least is “by the people for the people”, and so by spying on our citizens and restricting their freedom, we are rather than assuring their freedom we are assuring that we are less free. Furthermore, our countries freedom on an international standing means nothing if internally we are made menial by our own government. (response to statement #2)

"Reporters should submit their work to government officials so they may determine if it’s a threat to the country."

This quote represents the type of mentality embodied by the Ingsoc government, or at least one that could easily transition into the Ingsoc government. The press has traditionally be an allowed the relative independance because it is there to inform impartially. So, if this withholding of the truth is allowed, anything could be called a "threat" to the government, and stricken from the record. In 1984 things were censored, not only in real time, but in past publications, thereby allowing them to change reality to whatever they wanted. It is easy to see how allowing someone to censor without question could bleed over to them censoring past articles, and even replacing facts with fiction. Through this the news would become uninformative and far from impartial.
