"To assure our country's freedom, the government should be able to spy on its citizens"

In 1984 by George Orwell, constantly "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU"
Though, this isnt helping anyone. When denying freedom in every form, even to be watched when you want to be alone is very far. In the law + ethincs in journalism it would be invasion of privacy. This also contributes to an unsafe demeanor, for example Winston is always angry from the Idea of being watched, he's angry from this brainwashing of the State Party.
When the society is uncomfortable (expecialy from being spied on) this may break out eventually to a protest and people may get hurt.

I agree that in the rigid, controlled society of Oceania, spying is taken to an extreme. There is however a use to such spying. The Party has prevented all turmoil or unrest. There are invasions of privacy, and questionable methods, but as a whole the society is free from any meaningful conflict. In fact, conflict must invented to feed the human need for it.

I agree with Sam and Justine. Instead of wasting time and jobs spying on every citizen of a country, regardless if they have done anything in the past to make them a threat, the government should find a different way to protect the freedom of it's country. In 1984, the spying isn't even assuring freedom to the citizens because they have no freedom at all! If the government just left everyone alone in the first place, the majority of the people wouldn't do anything to harm the country. In no way does it make sense for the government to be able to spy on its citizens when they have no proof of any wrong doing.
