7. Society would be safer if we had security cameras in public places to catch potential criminals. Yes, society would be safer because there would be video proof of any person or persons committing a crime. Although this is unethical, as it invades a person's privacy, it instills more safety to the society as a whole. Not only this, a sense of paranoia overcomes anyone who is about to or thinking of breaking the law. This paranoia could further hinder future crime, as fear of getting caught may also stop premature felonies. So, despite unethical reasons, setting up security cameras to catch potential criminals would create a safer society because only a few would even try to commit these crimes through all the paranoia and uncertainty.

I mostly agree.
However, I'm not sure using video cameras could necessarily be considered unethical. In places like the U.S./U.K./Canada, they would surely be used like a security camera in a 7-11: to identify criminals and for use as evidence. This as opposed to them being watched constantly, which could happen within a more totalitarian regime (which would be unethical, of course).

I do agree that they would make society somewhat more safe.

After finishing 1984 and reading other student's posts on this statement, i have partly changed my opinion. Yes, setting up cameras everywhere will help with petty crimes, but the large ones which are of greater importance will be planned well enough to avoid a trivial nuisance such as a camera. Also, just because cameras have been set up does not mean that stops crime. It catches some of the perpetrators of the crime, but does not stop the crime itself.
