For an idea to exist, we must have words to express it. This is a true statement because in order for an idea to exist you need to think of it. If you have no words in order to create the idea in the first place the idea cannot exist. Also ideas are made to be expressed, whether through writing, images, speaking, etc. And in order for your idea to be conveyed properly, these images and text must be attached to words. Ideas rely on words to support them, ideas don't exist without words to express them or create them.

I am going to have to disagree. For words to ever begin and idea must have had to exist to create them. Words are only one way of expression, combines with countless other styles like drawing and dancing. If you are angry at someone, you have the idea that you are angry, but you do not think, "anger, anger, anger". No, you express your anger in actions or words, the latter not being essential. NO, NO, NO. I disagree intensly. -Jack Davidson

In response to your post, I disagree because as mentioned in my post, i felt that words can be used to depict ideas but they dont have to exist. With expressions and emotions, an idea could instantly be defined visually without any process of mental/verbal thought. All people are capable of sensing these ideas, including those who may be illiterate [or dont associate with words] because through other forms other than words, the idea is understood.

In 1984, Newspeak decreases the range of expression through words. Winston cannot think of how to descibe his feelings, but he still feels them. Therefore, ideas can exist without words.
