Marvin Eng - "For an idea to exist, we must have words to express it"

"For an idea to exist, we must have words to express it"

I highly disagree with this statement. There are so many ways to express your ideas without using words, such as music, art, basically just anyway to communicate with others with out using words. For example when watching a cartoon like “Tom and Jerry” there are no words because the music and the actions are enough to portray the idea that is being sent to the audience. When you see in movie a woman walking down a dark alley and the suspenseful music starts to play, you already know that something bad is about to happen. How? Because visually and audibly you can deduce things much easier than having just the words.
There is a reason a saying like “a picture is worth a thousand words” exist.

I agree with Marvin. I think that much of the time it can be hard to define an idea and explain it well so others will fully understand it without using words. But some ideas are so abstract that it is impossible to put them into words. A picture can convery an idea or feeling because people can see the picture and feel the emotion or idea that the picture evokes, while it could be very hard to explain in words.

I agree with Marvin. I'm sure most people have thought something or had an idea they couldn't put into words. I know I have definitley thought things that when I tried to express them to people using words, there weren't the right words. Just because I didn't have the right words to say what I wanted, didn't mean I didn't think it. Many things are not expressed through words, but still exsist. (Jada Wittow)

And another saying that works is "actions speaks louder than words". (im not counting this as a comment, just adding to my argument)

I also agree with Marvin. Yes, words are a big part in expressing ideas. But words can only go that far.
Art is another major way to express an idea. Sign language is also another way to showcase an idea. Words are not used in there, but you can get your point across from that.
There are some things where you can't describe it at all. You have to be there to understand it.

Again, I agree with Marvin. :)
For an idea to exist, there's no need for words. Words are just one way of expressing something that doesn't necessarily need to be said. For instance, if we go all the way back to the first humans, did they have words? No...probably not as developed as our language today. But they used motions, expressions, and other numerous things to express themselves or ideas.

I completely agree. There are so many others ways in which one can express them self. Music is used so much in our world. You can listen to a blues song, that’s just instruments and no vocals, and you feel all sad just because of the way the music is played. Pictures; drawings, paintings, photography typically don’t have words in them to get the point across, and just by looking at the picture you see an idea and you are able to interpret and understand. I like you example of Tom and jerry. I use to watch that show all the time, and I didn’t notice they never talked for a while because the music and their actions were enough to get their idea out.

I am not sure where I stand here, but I agree with the comments so far. I would like to add that words come out of ideas. We (humans), experienced happiness before we had words, and eventually we settled on a word to represent it.

I agree with the statement to a certain amount, however. I find it doubtful that we could communicate ideas well without words, even using paintings or music, because an abstract idea such as we are not familiar with cannot be shown.

In other words: humans saw happiness and knew what it looked like. But more philosophical ideas, such as natural rights, were not around in everyday life, and needed words to be expressed.

But all those pictures, arts, actions, dramas, etc mean nothing if you do not have the physical words to express them. Yes, a picture may be a thousand words but if your language only consist of 100 words how would you possibly explain to the general public how the other 900 "non-existent" words make you feel. !984 explains this concept very well.

This is not answering the question, the question is do ideas exist if the words are not there to express them.
