"Those who would exchange freedom for security deserve neither."

I disagree with this statement. Security provides safety and and keeping the peace. Without laws we would all be living in a state of nature. To some that may sound like fun but think of all the crime that would be commited. I think security it good but only to an extent.

I see what you mean about how security's purpose is to "keep the peace." Yet I could also see how exchanging freedom for security defeats the purpose of security itself. If security is supposed to keep the peace, it should keep the peace within society's freedom.

It is true that security keeps the peace, but the issue is where the line between security and freedom is drawn. If a reporter is pressured to censor his work, he loses his freedom to write what he chooses. If he allows himself to be censored because he is worried about his safety, then he is not really secure, and has lost his freedom. Say instead that he writes something taboo, and gets hurt because of it. Then he still has his freedom, and his message has been heard.
