Marvin Eng - "Torture of a person who is a threat to our country's freedom is acceptable as long as the person does not die"

i don't believe that torture in any form is acceptable, no matter how dangerous a person is to the country. Our country believes in freedom and justice, and torture in many cases is worse than death which is not justice. Near the end of the book Winston is captured by the Party and is tortured by O'Brien. Winston was not even very dangerous to the Party and Winston was tortured to the point of close insanity. No matter what the situation torture should not be the answer.

I agree that torture is never acceptable and I think that when people are tortured, it has no benefit to the people that are trying to squeeze information out of them. In 1984, when Winston is being tortured in the Ministry of Love, he hopes everyday that they will just kill him instead of torturing him. This shows how inhumane torturing people is and when people are suffering this badly, they usually admit to crimes they have not committed just to satisfy the people torturing them. So torturing does not help anyone in the end.

Marvin,

I agree with what you are saying. Torture should not be tolerated in any situations. In many cases a person would rather die than be tortured because of the severe pain they suffer from being tortured. For example in 1984 when Winston is at the Ministry of Love, he is tortured by O’Brien and the electricity and the beating, and all wants is for it to stop, at any cost. Often it seems that torture is used by a government to gain information from someone they have captured, but torture is not always a good method for extracting information because as we see from Winston in 1984, people will say all kinds of lies and make up stories just so that you will stop the torture.

I agree with you. Torture is even worse than death. When someone is torture, he or she has to face his or her fear which is like a worse nightmare that will haunt them forever. That's how come in many situations, you find people get tortured first, then eventually they get killed. Also, to be honest, torturing or killing doesn't really effect anything to the situation except making it either worse or no affect at all

I agree with Marvin’s statement. I don't think torture should be used on anybody, regardless if they are a threat to our country or not. Torturing a person can be worse than death, as Marvin said, and can be inhumane. When you capture a person you are raising the questions if that person is really a threat, and how do you tell if they are a threat. It should be kept in mind that people say things that they don't really mean out of anger. You can be harming a person who isn’t actually a threat, which does no good for anyone.

These are some interesting thoughts, and I agree with most of them. It is wrong for us to do it and get angry when others do it, and torture is bad for your health, but positive results have come from torturing. It really sounds bad to say, but torturing led to the death of osama bin ladin in 2011.
